WHY I LOVE
education

Kirk Isabelle is studying a BA (hons) Primary Education with QTS at Sheffield Hallam University.

Here’s why he loves it.

A boy with autism, who struggles to process information, has been given the task of composing a monologue.

A boy, who usually needs constant support, can thoroughly understand this task. For the first time he can, independently, produce the most interesting and creative work, because he has been given the freedom and choice. One does not tell this pupil how to accomplish the task, but by adapting the learning surroundings, his mind flourishes.

I was so proud of his final result; as was he, which made this experience all the more fulfilling.

A piece of writing from a pupil is not to a standard she has the potential to reach, so she is asked to redo it; a big ask, but a needed task. She knows she is expected to achieve highly, and this encouragement leads to an outstanding second attempt. Her hard-working, determined nature is evident, and she needs no persuasion.

This pupil proved to herself, and myself, that she was so capable. It was truly wonderful to observe such resilience, such progression, such a desire to succeed.

To make an actual, positive impact on future generations is the best job I know, and there was never a time I didn’t want to be a teacher. To educate, to care, to inspire, to learn, to challenge, to persevere, to achieve, and to enjoy and celebrate every success from your pupils.

This is what teaching is all about. Seeing first-hand how children develop into unique individuals, because of your influence, is the most rewarding, uplifting feeling. And the learning that is established in your classroom stays with your pupils forever – your teaching can genuinely inspire them to become the people they want to be.

"There was never a time I didn’t want to be a teacher."

The challenges along the way, the difficulties and stresses, are merely opportunities to show how strong you are as a person, as a teacher. Your strength will shine through the pupils’ determined attitudes, and this is all the motivation you need to continue through the endless marking, assessment, and planning, even as a trainee! Your pupils make this vocation so worthwhile. The hours are long, and the pressures increase, but education can change the world, and a teacher’s guidance and passion can change a pupil’s life.

I loved school, and my teachers never gave up on me, even when I had no confidence and was completely unsure of my ability. They were my inspiration, and taught me that anything is possible with hard work and self-belief. Because of this, I wish to encourage pupils, and teachers, to aim high, believe, take pride in their achievements, and never underestimate themselves.

Education is a gift, one to be respected and cherished. Is there anything more important, or more valuable, than nurturing, caring and inspiring the children of today? To go to university and train as a teacher has been the best decision I ever made, as I will, one day, make a difference. I am becoming a role model, a supporter and an educator, for many future generations to come.
